Macedon Ranges residents and businesses will be invited to buy shares in a new community cooperative – the Macedon Ranges Community Energy Group – which will finance Holgate’s system alongside other renewable energy projects in the municipality.
100% of the electricity generated will be used on site, with savings on power bills used to pay back a community-financed loan provide by the cooperative. The project is a win for business, community investors and the environment, and forms part of a broader renewable energy strategy aiming to generate enough renewable energy through local projects to meet the electricity needs of the entire shire.
The Holgate project was launched at the Macedon Ranges Sustainable Living Festival in Woodend on Saturday 3 March 2018 and prospective local investors are encouraged to fill out a short survey about their expectations and register interest http://energy.mrsg.org.au/solar-powered-beer.
